As a Christian, you know the Gospel story. You've heard how Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice in order to pay for your sins. He took the punishment that you deserved, and now you can be saved. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:16)
Life and Doctrine: the two essential components of salvation. In the same way that an airplane needs both wings to fly, we need to live the right way (life) and believe the right things (doctrine) in order to be saved.
Or so we have believed.
Is that really what the scripture is saying? On the surface, it does seem to say that salvation is dependent on our lives and our beliefs. Let's dig a little deeper.
